The Supermicro X7SBL-LN2 board
The X7SBL-LN2 is a motherboard made by Supermicro circa 2010, with the following features:
| Processor | One Intel LGA775 socket (works with the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400) |
|---|---|
| Memory | Four slots of DDR2 RAM |
| Chipset | Intel 3200 MCH and Intel ICH9R |
| Super I/O | Winbond 83627HG over LPC |
| Fan/temp controller | Winbond 83793G over SMBus |
| Onboard LAN | Two LAN interfaces (Intel 82573V and Intel 82573L) |
| Onboard VGA | XGI Z9S |
Detailed logs can be found below.
I used this board for quite a while as a secondary computer until it finally broke down recently. These notes detail some quirks about the board:
Tips and quirks
Fans at full speed
When powering up the board, the fans start up at full speed and then, after the board completes the POST, they slow down to the speed configured in the BIOS. However, if the board is being powered up after completely unplugging the machine from the AC line, then after a few minutes of uptime the board spins up all fans to full speed, even if the machine is not running warm. The fans then remain at maximum RPM and cannot be controlled through hwmon, nor by rebooting the machine. Workaround is to power cycle the computer (without unplugging the computer).
Changing CPU fan speed from Linux
If drivers for both Winbond chips are running, you can change the
CPU fan speed through /sys: set all _min
params to zero in both winbonds, then control fan speed
with w83793/0-002f/pwm1.
Linux framebuffer driver for the XGI
The onboard VGA (XGI Z9S) is supported by the sisfb
framebuffer driver in Linux (kernel version 6.10.5). Config
options: CONFIG_FB_SIS, CONFIG_FB_SIS_300
and CONFIG_FB_SIS_315 (I had all three enabled).
USB boot
The board supports booting from USB but is extremely picky about the USB drive, the filesystem and partition layout on the drive, etc.
Video expansion
The manual says plugging a graphics card is not supported. That is not true. You can install a PCIe graphics card and it will work fine but it takes some work:
- Most graphics cards are 16x wide and won't fit in the board PCIe connectors, because they are not open-ended. You can desolder the connectors and replace them with open-ended connectors, or (like I did) just make a hole in the connector.
- One possible slot for the graphics card would be slot 6 (near the IPMI slot). Unfortunately you cannot connect a graphics card there because the SBX slot is placed right in line with the PCIe slot. The solution is to remove the SBX slot: you could desolder the connector, or (like I did) just break the connector plastic with some pliers then cut the pins one by one.
- You could probably plug the graphics card in slot 5 (the slot closest to the PCI slot). However, the graphics card PCIe edge connector collides with the CMOS battery holder. (I did not test this slot, though)
- After plugging the graphics board, you must disable the onboard VGA by closing pins 2-3 in the JPG1 jumper (located between the Super I/O and the XGI Z9S chips)
- Probably only old graphics cards with video BIOS will work with the board
I had a NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT plugged into slot 6 for a long time, and it worked just fine. Under Windows 7 the performance was much better than the integrated XGI Z9S, even considering the GPU was running at half PCIe bandwidth.
Option ROMs not loading
For some PCI cards like the Advansys ABP-970U SCSI adapter, the motherboard does not run the option ROM on boot. The problem seems to be a memory map conflict: the PCI card wants its option ROM mapped in the option ROM area below 1 MB, but the motherboard BIOS already allocates all space in that range (for the video BIOS and the LAN option ROMs). There is apparently no way to prevent the BIOS from allocating the space (e.g. disabling the onboard LAN seems to increase the allocation for the video BIOS).
Since I needed to access the ABP-970U configuration program I wrote a little assembler program that modifies the PCI BARs and manually loads its option ROM. It may be run by GNU GRUB.
